TWO police officers from Pietermaritzburg are set to appear in court today following their arrest for alleged corruption linked to a bail money request.

The officers, aged 41 and 42, who were arrested by members of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, a provincial police spokesperson, said police in KwaZulu-Natal are acting on their commitment to root out corruption and criminality from within the service.

He said a case of common assault was registered at Alexandra Road Police Station on February 28.

Magwaza said it is alleged that on March 3, two police officers, accompanied by the complainant in the assault case went to the workplace of the suspect in the matter.

“The suspect was placed under arrest, and the arresting officers are alleged to have requested R1,000 bail money from the suspect. The suspect did not have cash on him, however arrangements were made with the employer to pay the requested amount, with an agreement that the employer will deduct the money from his salary.”

Magwaza said when the suspect was released by the court he enquired about his bail money, and he was directed to go to the police station where a case of corruption was subsequently registered.

“On May 22, one of the police officers proceeded to the complainant’s workplace to pay back the R1,000 and asked him to withdraw the corruption case against him and his colleague.

“The complainant refused to take the money from the police officer. The Provincial Anti-Corruption members arrested the two officers and charged them with corruption,” he said.
