BRINGING together musicians, devotees, cultural enthusiasts and members of the wider community, the Andhra Maha Sabha of South Africa (AMSSA ) hosted its annual Swami Thyagaraja Music Festival on Saturday.
The event was held at the Andhra Cultural Centre in Havenside, Chatsworth.
Archana Sridhar, AMSSA’s public relations officer, said the event celebrates one of India’s most revered saints and composers, Swami Thyagaraja.

“The festival paid tribute to the enduring legacy of Thyagaraja, whose compositions have formed the cornerstone of Carnatic music for over two centuries.
“Through a series of vocal and instrumental performances, artists showcased the depth, beauty and spiritual richness of his kritis, many of which continue to inspire audiences across generations and continents,” she said.

Sridhar said the event was more than a musical gathering.
“The festival served as a reminder of the values that Thyagaraja championed - devotion, humility, discipline and the pursuit of excellence. In an age dominated by technology, constant connectivity and fast-paced lifestyles, such cultural and spiritual platforms provide a much-needed opportunity for reflection, mindfulness and human connection.
“For South Africa’s Indian community, the festival also plays a vital role in preserving cultural heritage. It creates a space where younger generations can engage with classical music traditions, learn about their roots and appreciate the universal messages embedded within Thyagaraja’s compositions,” she said.
