Two armed suspects were fatally shot, while others sustained injuries during a shootout with police in Lenasia.
The incident occurred during a Crime Intelligence-led operation in collaboration with multidisciplinary law enforcement units.
The suspects were allegedly involved in multiple ATM bombings and other serious crimes across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.
Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lt. General Shadrack Sibiya, along with senior SAPS officials, is currently at the scene and will brief the media on further developments.
The crime scene remains active as investigations continue.
This latest incident comes amid growing concerns over safety and crime in the area. In January, 27-year-old Ashwin Mouwers was gunned down outside the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court while waiting to testify in an ongoing murder trial.
His killing has reignited calls for stronger witness and whistleblower protection.
According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, Mouwers was set to testify in a murder case related to a 2021 killing in Eldorado Park.
