A close relative has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of an 83-year-old Phoenix woman.

The woman's daughter,60, is currently fighting for her life in the hospital.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the women were attacked at their home on Monday. The victims were found in a pool of blood.

They had sustained various stab wounds all over their body, while the 60-year-old woman's throat had been slit.

By Wednesday morning, the private security company confirmed that a close relative had been arrested in connection with the murder.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) have been approached for comment as to when the suspect is expected to appear in court.

According to RUSA boss Prem Balram, the husband of the 60-year-old woman arrived home on Monday and found the door locked.

"He attempted to attract the attention of his wife and elderly mother-in-law without success. He thereafter gained forced entry into the house and located both females in pools of blood in the passage," said the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).

He said they were requested to provide statements to the Phoenix South African Police Service (SAPS), following claims made by the surviving victim.
