A 35-year-old foreign national has been arrested for possession of and dealing in drugs following a police operation at Savanna Mall in Polokwane on Tuesday.

Members of the Public Order Policing Unit were conducting festive-season operations aimed at disrupting drug trafficking and criminal gangs when they received a tip-off about individuals allegedly selling drugs at the mall.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said officers quickly moved to the scene and identified a suspect who matched the description provided.

“Upon searching him, the members found a plastic bag containing drugs. When he noticed the police approaching, he fled toward his motor vehicle, a white Ford Fiesta with Gauteng registration plates. In the process, he collided with a delivery bakkie belonging to one of the shops.

"He again fled on foot, and the police gave chase and swiftly apprehended him,” said Ledwaba.

The suspect’s home in Taurus Avenue in Sterpark was later searched, where police found more drugs, including nyaope. Officers also confiscated crystal meth and heroin.
