Three people, including a nine-month-old baby, were shot and killed in a late-night attack at Sunbird Court in Athlone on Tuesday night.
Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said officers responded to reports of a shooting at about 10pm and found the bodies of the infant and two women, aged 25 and 36, all with fatal wounds.
“The South African Police Service strongly condemns the senseless and brutal killing of three people, including an infant, in a shooting incident last night,” said Traut.
Two adult males who were also shot were taken to a medical facility for treatment.
Police said three unknown suspects fled the scene and have not yet been arrested. The motive remains under investigation, with detectives from the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit leading the probe.
“All available resources have been mobilised to trace and apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime,” Traut said.
He added that police were working to stabilise the area and reassure residents.
“SAPS unequivocally condemns violent crimes and we assure the residents of Athlone and the broader community that every effort will be made to bring the perpetrators to book and to restore safety and stability in the area,” he said.
Police urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop or submit tips anonymously via the MySAPS mobile application. No arrests have been made.
