SIX armed robbers disguised as eThekwini Municipality workers calmly robbed a Chatsworth jewellery store, reassuring staff they wouldn't be harmed before escaping with jewellery and cellphones.
This appears to be a syndicate, following a similar robbery at Cornubia Mall last Sunday.
According to reports from PT Alarms and Security, the six armed men, suspected to be part of a syndicate targeting jewellery stores, held up the staff at the store in Croftdene at around 9am, just after the store had opened.
“The armed men calmly entered the store, and asked the staff to remain calm. They assured the staff that they were not there to hurt them and they just wanted the jewellery. They were clad in eThekwini Municipality uniforms.
“They were all armed. They escaped with an undisclosed amount of jewellery and cellphones. They fled in a white Toyota car,” said Dhevan Govindsamy, spokesperson for PT Alarms and Security.
Last Sunday, 10 armed men robbed a jewellery store at the Cornubia Mall.
Prem Balram, head of Reaction Unit South Africa, said they responded to frantic calls from shoppers at the mall, alerting them of the robbery in progress.
“The suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of jewellery before fleeing the mall,” Balram said.
