A CONVICTED child rapist who allegedly assaulted a 10-year-old girl while on parole has abandoned his bail application at the Chatsworth Magistrate's Court. Abdool Kader Yusuf, 66, faces serious charges with prosecutors revealing he has five pages of previous convictions.
On Friday, Yusuf, was scheduled to go ahead with his bail application, but his Legal Aid attorney, Ms Cele, told the court that after she had consulted with him and advised him of the strength of the State’s case, he decided to abandon bail.
Yusuf, who lives in the close-knit flats area in Crossmoor, allegedly lured children to his flat in August while they were playing in the sports grounds near his home.
While they were at his flat, he sent all the children to the tuckshop, but allegedly raped the 10-year-old girl he asked to stay behind with him.
He was arrested in September.
State prosecutor Thamandri Kengan-Narainsamy said the State was opposed to bail.
She said investigations were outstanding and interviews needed to be scheduled with the victim.
Yusuf had provided the court with an alternative address in Phoenix.
However, Kengan-Narainsamy said that the address could not be verified.
At his previous court appearance last week, Yusuf’s Legal Aid attorney, Ms H Vudla, said he was against his photograph being taken or published in the media due to him being concerned that his family members would be in danger due to the allegations against him.
Kengan-Narainsamy said the matter was of public interest as Yusuf had a string of previous convictions, and the State believes more victims will come forward after recognising him.
She said he had five pages of previous convictions. His last sentence in a rape matter ended on November 25, 2024.
The court granted media permission to photograph the accused on the basis that the suffering, pain and trauma of the victims weighed against the harm Yusuf’s family could experience by publishing his photograph.
