Former MK Party secretary general Floyd Shivambu has officially announced the formation of Afrika Mayibuye Movement as both a political movement and a political party, adding he is the president of the organisation.
The widely anticipated announcement came during a media briefing held on Friday in Midrand, Johannesburg, following a national consultation process that began in June.
Shivambu said the countrywide consultation process revealed a widespread desire among South Africans to be genuinely heard.
“The number one lesson is that people crave genuine listening,” he said.
“We also have learned that our people have got a lot to say, that good non-certificants possess profound knowledge and ideas about their communities…”
He added that the public demanded institutionalised participation in governance and that shared struggles helped foster unity across communities.
“We have now come here, comrades, to announce the end of the consultation process…”
Shivambu declared the formation of the Afrika Mayibuye Movement, abbreviated as “Mayibuye”, alongside the release of its founding document, the Africa Mayibuye Restoration Manifesto.
“So the shortened version of the Africa Mayibuye Movement is not AMM. The shortened version... is Mayibuye.”
The manifesto outlines the movement’s ideological stance, challenges facing South Africa, and its positions on issues such as landlessness, inequality, and national debt.
“There are 100 reasons that have been identified… even if it was just one... there would be a basis to found a political movement…”
Shivambu, who was expelled from the MK Party for allegedly breaching its ideological line, said Mayibuye is committed to total political, economic, and cultural freedom - "now, and not tomorrow.”
“We are fighting to build a capable developmental state now and we are fighting to be a caring and responsive people's movement.”
He also revealed the organisation’s logo and colours: black for African identity, green for land and rebirth, gold for Africa’s wealth, red for the blood of martyrs, and purple to symbolise royalty and faith traditions.
The logo features a clenched black fist holding a “spear pen” - a symbol that starts as a spear and ends as a pen - set inside a purple circle with a map of Africa.
“Now we are fighting our struggles with clear ideas, with information, with superior knowledge and identity…”
He added that the full manifesto will be made publicly available online for further input from citizens.
