Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, has demanded that Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi be summoned to appear before the Ad Hoc Committee investigating his allegations.
Speaking at an Ad Hoc Committee meeting, Malema dismissed any suggestion that Mkhwanazi could avoid scrutiny, insisting that the process would not be dictated by the top cop.
"The nation will not be told by Mkhwanazi what must happen," Malema declared. "If we are looking for him, we have to find him. And if he is not going to make himself available, we're going to have to summon him."
At the virtual meeting on Friday, Soviet Lekganyane, the committee's chairperson, said that they had issued a request to Mkhwanazi.
Malema added that Mkhwanazi is the one who "started this mess" and that he must take responsibility.
"He is not going to tell us about commissions. We don't know what the commission is doing. We're not interfering with it. Mkhwanazi must be summoned. He is not going to tell us now that he is not available."
The Inkatha Freedom Party's (IFP) Mangaqa Albert Mncwango echoed Malema's sentiments. "We should not open the gap for people to not be available when we need them. Otherwise, we are not going to meet our deadlines," Mncwango said.
The committee's chairperson, Soviet Lekganyane announced that Mkhwanazi had been invited to appear before the committee along with other senior police officials.
"By August 31, all invitations had gone out...There is no person who has been given a date of appearance before the committee. We requested a response before September 3. The first person who will appear before this committee is General Mkhwanazi," Lekganyane.
Lekganyane went on to say that Mkhwanazi confirmed that he would be available.
"General Mkhwanazi requested the committee to allow him to continue with other engagements that he has until September 24. That is the period when he will be available."
