As bitter winter weather sweeps across Cape Town, U-turn Homeless Ministries has urgently activated additional emergency shelter services to meet the growing number of homeless individuals seeking refuge from the cold, rain, and wind.
“With terrible weather battering Cape Town, U-turn Homeless Ministries has activated additional emergency support to respond to the increased number of homeless clients seeking shelter and warmth from the inclement weather,” the organisation said.
The situation on the ground is described as critical, with the organisation noting a “marked influx of clients urgently seeking assistance.”
In response, U-turn is making extra accommodation and resources available to meet the demand.
Jean-Ray Knighton Fitt, CEO of U-turn, stressed the importance of immediate action and community support.
“When the weather turns severe, the need on the streets grows rapidly. We want to respond and with the public’s help, we can.”
While U-turn’s long-standing mission is to focus on long-term rehabilitation and reintegration of the homeless, the organisation recognises the urgency during weather crises.
“U-turn’s core focus is long-term rehabilitation and reintegration, but in moments like these, we step up to meet immediate needs too. This emergency effort is only possible through media coverage, faith-based partnerships and public generosity,” said Fitt.
Members of the public are invited to help by donating essential items or making financial contributions.
Items in high demand include blankets, yoga mats, non-perishable food, tea, coffee, toilet paper, and second-hand clothing, particularly small to medium-sized men’s clothing.
Donations can be dropped off at the U-turn Head Office at 155 Second Avenue, Kenilworth, between 8.30am and 9pm until Friday, June 27, or from 8am to 12pm on Saturday, June 28.
