Elderly couple killed, six injured in Shallcross house fire

A couple died and six others were injured in a house fire on Midmar Road in Shallcross on Tuesday morning. 

According to ALS Paramedics, they responded to reports of a fire just after 6.30 am. 

Spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said ALS Paramedics Medical Services arrived on the scene to find the Ethekweni Fire Department already on the scene and fighting the blaze.

"Paramedics stood by and assessed six occupants who had managed to escape from the residence and had sustained minor injuries.

"Paramedics were called to enter the house once the fire had been extinguished by the fire department, and unfortunately, a gruesome discovery was made of a couple believed to be in their late sixties who had suffered fatal injury as a result of the fire.

"Both persons, a male and female, were declared deceased on the scene."

Jamieson said that at this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown; however, SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.
