A two-storey Department of Home Affairs building in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, has been set alight by angry protesters.

Firefighters are battling a blaze at a Department of Home Affairs building in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, on Tuesday morning.
William Ntladi, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Service, said they received calls about the fire just after 8 am and confirmed that firefighters are busy at the scene.
He said that the two-storey building has been severely damaged and there were no injuries reported.
“The top section is the one that is well alight. The bottom one - we’re still battling to break in and go to see what’s happening. Resources are here, multiple fire stations, with multiple vehicles, and a number of firefighters are on site,” he said.

President Street and Jack Street remain open for diverted traffic, while surrounding buildings have been evacuated and closed off for safety and operational reasons.
Ntladi said the incident is still unfolding, with no casualties reported so far.
“The actual cause of the fire is still undetermined,” he added.
There is a protest action taking place outside the vicinity of the building.
It is believed that the protest is due to evictions.
