Durban Metro Police have suspended two scholar transport vehicles after uncovering serious safety violations during a targeted enforcement operation along the R102 on Tuesday morning, POST has reported.
Among the vehicles impounded was a Volkswagen Kombi found transporting 29 schoolchildren, despite being licensed to carry only 10 passengers.
Members of the DMPS Strike Team conducted inspections as part of a broader drive to ensure that vehicles ferrying pupils comply with road safety standards and licensing requirements.
Officers stopped the overloaded Kombi and carried out a detailed mechanical assessment. In addition to overcrowding, authorities identified multiple defects that rendered the vehicle unroadworthy.
Police reported that three tyres were missing wheel nuts, the sliding door could not be opened from the outside, and there were visible engine oil leaks. Exposed electrical wiring was also detected.
The vehicle was immediately suspended from operating.
In a separate incident, officers intercepted a Toyota Avanza being used for scholar transport. Inspectors found that the vehicle’s battery was not secured and that the front suspension had been tampered with. Additional mechanical faults were also noted.
That vehicle was likewise suspended pending compliance with safety standards.
“The safety of our children is non-negotiable,” the DMPS said in a statement, adding that zero-tolerance enforcement would continue.
Authorities have urged scholar transport operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and properly licensed, warning that failure to comply will result in firm action.
