A BEREA detective has been arrested in a sting operation after allegedly demanding R9 000 from a Phoenix mother to prevent her son's arrest and close the case docket.

Sergeant Marcel Dorasamy was granted R2 500 bail after appearing in the Verulam Magistrate's Court following his arrest by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

He was arrested during a sting operation in Phoenix on Tuesday.

Lizzy Suping, spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), said the woman reported that the officer had allegedly demanded R4 000 to ensure that her son was not arrested, and a further R5 000 for the docket to be closed.

“The arrest follows a complaint from a member of the public, who alleged that the officer demanded she pay R4 000 in exchange for ensuring that her son is not arrested.

“The complaint further alleges that Sergeant Dorasamy demanded an additional R5 000 for the docket to be closed. The complainant then informed the accused officer that she could only afford an amount of R2 500 at the time, and would pay the remainder of the balance the following month.

“She then lodged a complaint with IPID, who sought and obtained an approval from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to conduct an undercover operation. Sergeant Dorasamy was then arrested when he arrived at the agreed location in Phoenix to collect the R2 500 as promised,” Suping added.

Dorasamy is due to reappear in court next year.
