Midnight curfew for clubs: Joburg tightens the rules ahead of year-end

Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, has announced that a temporary lockdown is now in effect for all non-compliant alcohol outlets, entertainment venues and events not approved by the City of Johannesburg, as many prepare to usher in the new year.

Tshwaku said alcohol outlets must close by 18:00, while entertainment venues are required to shut by midnight (00:00). Only venues participating in city-approved events will be permitted to operate beyond these hours.

He also warned that non-compliance will be met with strict enforcement, with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Emergency Management Services (EMS), Disaster Management and other city stakeholders placed on high alert.

“All liquor outlets, taverns and shebeens, particularly in the Inner City, Yeoville, Hillbrow and across Johannesburg, are required to close daily and may only operate when participating in city-approved events. Non-compliance will result in enforcement action, including closure and penalties. Public safety and lawful operation are non-negotiable,” Tshwaku said.

Tshwaku emphasised that past experiences and statistics have demonstrated that restricting liquor trading hours is a vital method to minimise alcohol-related harm.

According to past experiences and statistics, restricting liquor trading hours can help minimise alcohol-related harm. Those found contravening the conditions of the Liquor Act, such as allowing intoxicated people, underage people, and overcrowding inside liquor premises, will have to face the risk of their stock being confiscated and necessary fines imposed on their businesses. Additionally, vendors that permit parties outside or in front of their establishments will be shut down, and any music systems that are found to be playing loud music will be seized.

Tshwaku detailed that compliance by all residents and businesses is mandatory, as these measures are in place to ensure public safety and to usher everyone into 2026 safely and responsibly.
