South Africans in action - July 31

Team to watch:

The men’s lightweight rowing four could be the surprise stars for Team South Africa. They compete in their semifinal on Tuesday and are looking for a place in the final.

Villain:

The IOC for allowing “Issy the Oarful” to compete. Hamadou Djibo Issaka is probably the worst competitor at London 2012. He finished almost 90 seconds behind the winner in his single skulls event – the rower from Niger only took up the sport three months ago.

Riding with royalty:

One of the opponents of South African Alex Peternell in the eventing competition is Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne and wife of former England rugby player Mike Tindall.

Misplaced priorities:

The media room has about 70 television sets showing the action from all the events, but the normally very accommodating staff were not prepared to tune even one to the Sharks victory over the Stormers on Saturday – where are their priorities?
