Controlling distance when chipping is a crucial aspect of golf, and it's a skill that can be developed with practice and technique. The goal is to get the ball to land softly on the green, close to the pin, giving you a makeable putt.

To start, focus on your tempo. A smooth, consistent tempo helps you develop a feel for distance. Try to maintain a steady rhythm, even for different length shots. This will help you gauge the distance and speed of the shot more accurately.

Your body's natural motion is also essential. Let your body's rotation and weight transfer help you generate power and control. This will help you maintain a consistent stroke and develop a feel for the shot.

The lie of the ball is another critical factor. Adjust your technique accordingly – for example, a ball in the rough might require a more lofted club and a slightly different stroke.

Experimenting with different trajectories is also vital. Practise hitting shots with different trajectories – high and soft, low and running – to develop a feel for how the ball reacts.

A good drill to practice for chipping which I often use is called standing at the target. Place your legs and chest facing the target directly . From this position , lock your left side and make chip shots. Focus on the right side coming through the shot . It’s a great drill for feel of a very specific shot needed in golf to lower scores.

Finally, develop a pre-shot routine to help you focus and prepare for each shot. This will help you stay calm and execute the shot more effectively.

By mastering these techniques, you'll be able to control your distance when chipping, giving you more confidence and success around the greens. With practice and patience, you'll be chipping like a pro in no time. Catch you on the fairways!
