This week we witnessed some unethical behavior from some fans at the US PGA tour event where Hideki Matsuyama was going to win. The first incident was where a fan dropped a chair purposely and the second was a scream from the crowd.
This is in bad faith of the integrity of golf, let’s look at some key tips to align yourself with the ethics of the course.
When you're out on the course with a playing partner, it's not just about hitting the ball; it's about respect, honesty, and sportsmanship.
Golf is a game of integrity, so let faster players play through if you're holding them up. There's no need to slow down the entire group behind you. Stay silent during shots, and avoid distractions – your partner's trying to focus.
Taking care of the course is also part of the deal. Fix divots, rake bunkers, and keep the course tidy for the next players. Keep track of your score and play by the rules; honesty is key in golf.
Show some respect – congratulate your playing partner on good shots, and be gracious in defeat.
A little kindness goes a long way in making the game enjoyable for everyone involved.
When someone's about to hit, position yourself out of their line of sight and away from the ball's trajectory. Here's the general rule of thumb:
Stand 10-15 feet behind or to the side of the player, and make sure you're not distracting them. If you're on the green, stand off to the side or behind the hole. Avoid standing directly behind the ball or in the player's swing path. Catch you on the fairways!
