Lesotho’s 10km national record holder, Neheng Khatala, is ready for triple the challenge this August when she takes spart in the Totalsports Women’s Race in Durban on Sunday, August 3, Cape Town on Saturday, August 9, and Johannesburg on Sunday, August 17.
Neheng finished third at the race in Durban last year in a time of 32:03.
With the format of the iconic race that continues to empower women through running evolving from a one-day event featuring all three races, she is eyeing a demanding hat-trick of 10km races.
Neheng has previously competed in the Totalsports Women’s Race in Durban and Johannesburg, but this year will mark her Cape Town debut.
“Each city offers a unique racing experience,” Neheng said.“In Durban, the fast and flat route along the coast is ideal for testing my speed and enjoying the sea breeze.
“I’m especially looking forward to experiencing the race for the first time in Cape Town, soaking up the energy of the Mother City. Joburg boasts a vibrant crowd and a high-altitude challenge that always brings a special atmosphere. My goal in Durban is to run a strong, fast 10km and build momentum for the season.
“In Cape Town, I want to compete confidently, enjoy my debut, and aim for a podium finish. In Joburg, I’ll aim to improve on my previous performance and push myself in the altitude conditions.”
Kenya’s Christine Njoki took advantage of the change to the race format to win back-to back races in Durban and Cape Town last year.
Ethiopia’s Selam Gebre came in second in the Durban race (32:01), while Cacisile Sosibo was the first South African to cross the finish line, sealing sixth place in a time of 33:27. Local favourite Tayla Kavanagh finished in seventh place.
Boxer Athletics Club star Glenrose Xaba dominated the Johannesburg race from start to finish and secured gold in 32:56. Ethiopia’s Diniya Kedir Abaraya claimed second place, while Sosibo rounded out the podium in third.
