The immediate reaction to Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) appointment of Patrick Moroney as the new Convenor of Selectors for the Proteas men’s team is: why now?
Until Moroney’s appointment last month, the role had been vacant for two years.
With no Convenor of Selectors, it allowed Proteas coach Shukri Conrad to choose teams entirely at his own discretion.
During this period, Conrad led the team to the World Test Championship title and in the final in particular he raised eyebrows with a couple of selections like the inclusion of Lungi Ngidi over Dane Paterson.
Now, it seems CSA is intent on having more say in team selection, which led to Moroney’s hiring.
Moroney was eager to have a positive impact on the team.
“It was quite a rigorous process,” Moroney told SportsBoom.co.za in an exclusive interview.
“We had interviews…I won’t lie, it was quite tough. I’m not sure who all the competition was, but I’m very happy to have been appointed.”
“I’ve had the privilege to be part of the setup in a different role before. Now, stepping into this one, I’m really looking forward to what lies ahead.”
Moroney does already have a working relationship with Conrad, and that should serve him well in his tenure.
“I’ve worked with Shuks at Under-19 level. He’s always done things his own way and preferred to pick his own team. But as it happened, he’s quite comfortable working with me. We’ve always had a solid working relationship.
“We may have different views walking into the room, but we’ll come out with one collective decision. That’s important. At the end of the day, we’re South Africans and we are resilient people.”
