Considering he made the fifth highest score in Test cricket history, South Africa's Wiaan Mulder’s has an incredible amount of criticism for his incredible 367 not out against hosts Zimbabwe last month.

The reason for the criticism is that Mulder was also captaining South Africa for the first time in the Test in Bulawayo, but chose to declare the Proteas innings on 625 at lunch on day two.

With plenty of time left in the Test match, Mulder could have easily made an effort to eclipse the highest score in the format, which is the unbeaten 400 West Indian legend Brian Lara scored back in 2004.

A few weeks later, Mulder believes it was the correct call.

Team First: Why 367 Runs in a Test is Special

“I made the right decision,” he said firmly in an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.co.za.

“The team was already in a strong position before lunch. It was never about the record. It was about winning the game. That’s where my head was at.

“A lot of people are crucifying me for not going for 400... but 367 in a Test is special. The team comes first and that’s how it should be.”

Mulder, a Reliable All-Rounder for the Proteas: Aspiring to Be Remembered as a Good Person and Team Man

Mulder, who has played just 21 Tests since making his debut in 2019, is fast becoming a reliable all-rounder in the Proteas side. At 27, he still has a long future in the game.

“I want to be remembered as a good person and a team man. What I achieve on the field doesn’t really bother me, as long as I contribute positively. I want to be someone my teammates can rely on for consistent behaviour and strong values.

“I’m a religious person, and that’s what I want to pass on to my kids one day. My spot in the team is temporary and anyone can come through and take it. That’s cricket, and that’s life.”
