As South Africa prepare to begin their T20 World Cup campaign on Wednesday, it will be with one player who will be stepping onto the biggest stage at senior level for the first time, and he’s not exactly a youngster anymore.

That player is allrounder Corbin Bosch.

Though he has become an integral part of the Proteas side over the last two years, international success with the senior team came much later than initially expected.

Bosch was part of the SA Under-19 Cricket World Cup-winning side in 2014, which included players like Kagiso Rabada and Aiden Markram.

Bosch’s Journey: From Under-19 World Cup Champion to Proteas Debut in 2024

In fact, Bosch, now aged 31, only made his debut for the Proteas in 2024, long after his big-name Under-19 teammates did.

"I think we've definitely reminded each other that we have been a part of a team that has won a World Cup in 2014, although it being an under-19 World Cup," Bosch told SportsBoom.co.za in an exclusive interview.

"We haven't maybe spoken about it as such, but I think we definitely draw a lot of inspiration from it.”

"I think it was an incredible tournament with a team that didn't seem likely to win the World Cup, but ended up winning, and I think we can draw a lot of motivation from that. Hopefully, the three of us can be a part of a team that finally gets the men over the line.”

The Proteas take on Canada in Ahmedabad on Monday afternoon, with the match beginning at 3.30pm SA time.

The minnows have already made a big impression in the opening weekend of the T20 World Cup, and therefore the Proteas might just be a tad more cautious against a side they are expected to completely dominate.
