Dewald Brevis became the most expensive player in the history of the Betway SA20 League after being signed by Pretoria Capitals for a new record fee of R16.5 million at the Season 4 auction in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
The Proteas middle-order batter, 22, was the subject of a bidding war between the Capitals and Durban’s Super Giants.
Brevis, who previously played for defending champions MI Cape Town, beat the record set just a few moments earlier when Aiden Markram was bought by Durban's Super Giants (DSG) for R14 million.
Markram had previously led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to two championship titles and runners-up position in three seasons. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape used their Right to Match (RTM) card at a price of R12.4 million, but DSG upped their purchase by a further R1.6 million to acquire the Proteas T20I captain.

The record heading into the S4 Player Auction was held by SEC’s Tristan Stubbs R9.2 million at the maiden SA20 auction.
Proteas Wiaan Mulder was also bought by Joburg Super Kings for R9 million in the Marquee Set 1.
Teenage fast bowler Kwena Maphaka was sold to Durban’s Super Giants for R2.3 million, with Lungi Ngidi going for the same amount to Pretoria Capitals.
World No 1 ODI bowler Keshav Maharaj also went to the Capitals for R1.7 million.
