The Proteas have suffered a major setback ahead of the three-match ODI series against Pakistan, starting in Faisalabad on Tuesday, after Dewald Brevis was ruled out due to a low-grade shoulder muscle strain.

Brevis, 22, sustained the injury during the third T20 International at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday.

The dynamic batter will undergo rehabilitation with the Proteas Men’s medical team in Pakistan in preparation for the upcoming Test tour of India.

His replacement for the ODI series will be announced in due course.

The Proteas on Tuesday also welcomed back veteran opening batter and wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock back to the ODI fold. De Kock retired from ODIs after the 2023 World Cup semi-final defeat to Australia in Kolkata, but has since made a u-turn and is available to the Proteas in both white-ball formats.

He has already been reintegrated into the T20I squad after playing the once-off match against Namibia and the three-match series against Pakistan.

De Kock is the seventh leading all-time ODI run-scorer for the Proteas with 6770 runs at an average of 45.74 at a strike-rate of 96.64. This includes 21 centuries and 30 half-centuries.

Top-order Matthew Breetzke will also lead the Proteas in the three-match series in the absence of the injured Temba Bavuma.
