Western Province will look to unleash more United Rugby Championship (URC) players in the Currie Cup on Saturday but will not overload their team with stars, as they aim to end a disappointing domestic season on a high note.
Still winless after six games and anchored at the bottom of the points log, the Western Cape derby at the DHL Stadium will offer them a final chance to regain some lost pride as they aim to claim the scalp of the Cavaliers. The Bolanders, currently second, are chasing a home semi-final and can seal it with a victory.
They have been the surprise package of the competition after returning to South Africa’s premier domestic rugby tournament for the first time since 2016. The men from Wellington will head to the Mother City full of confidence and well-supported, hoping to upstage their traditionally "bigger" neighbours.
John Dobson, director of rugby at the Stormers, addressed the media on Monday and took responsibility for WP’s struggles in the Currie Cup. He vowed they would do everything in their power to secure a victory this weekend.
Dobson said he would not be stepping in for this game, with head coach Labeeb Levy set to finish the Currie Cup campaign alongside his support staff.
“There will be a couple more guys coming in to join URC players like Brannas (Deon Fourie) and Paul (de Villiers) in the team this week, but we have a friendly against the Sharks next week that we’re treating as our dress rehearsal for the URC,” Dobson said.
“I don’t think it’s fair to tell Labeeb to work with an incohesive team and do his best, while we take 25 guys out to prepare for the URC.
"Then, when some cavalry becomes available, we put someone else in the coaching box to take the credit. However, the team will look a bit different this weekend.”
The 38-year-old Fourie, who played his 99th game in the losing effort against the Pumas last weekend, is set to reach 100 caps for WP on Saturday. The Cape side will aim to give him a proper send-off in what is likely to be his final game in the blue and white hoops.
Dobson praised the hard-working utility forward for his contributions to the union.
“I’m pleased we didn’t finish his career on 99 caps. To have his 100th game at DHL Stadium is special.
"There will be a few buses coming from Wellington. All the guys in the side know how massive he is for us. The guys will play for Deon, and they respect him.”
