Orlando Pirates’ CAF Champions League campaign was ended in heartbreak last season, and as they embark on another journey in Africa’s premier club competition, the pressure will immediately return with the mission to improve on last year’s semi-final exit.
The Buccaneers will take on Lesotho Premier League side Lioli FC at the Free State Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
The club has undergone a wholesale of changes, but those adjustments have not altered their ambitions—not only to be the best in South Africa but also to make their mark across the continent. The responsibility will now fall squarely on coach Abdeslam Ouaddou to guide the team effectively.
With their midweek clash against Magesi FC postponed, the Buccaneers will arrive for Saturday’s match in improved shape, having enjoyed a full week of rest since their 3-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 final.
Despite recent success, the Sea Robbers cannot afford to rest on their laurels or take their opponents lightly. Below are five key talking points ahead of the upcoming match.
The MTN8 triumph provides Ouaddou and his players with a significant confidence boost as they enter a particularly busy period, including the start of their Champions League campaign.
The Moroccan tactician already had to navigate a storm of criticism earlier this season following consecutive league defeats. With the recent trophy win, the team can now focus fully on their upcoming challenge without added internal pressure.
Depth was a major issue last season, but Ouaddou now has several options at his disposal. The success of his campaign will depend on how well he rotates the squad and keeps fringe players ready, particularly with multiple competitions on the horizon.
The defence has been tested early in the season, as injuries to centre-backs forced him to field youngsters Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Lebone Seema. With club captain Nkosinathi Sibisi returning on the bench against Stellenbosch, the question remains on whether he will reclaim a starting role this weekend.
While the Sea Robbers are clear favorites due to a stronger squad and experience in more competitive leagues, they cannot underestimate their opponents. Lioli are the reigning Lesotho Premier League champions, having also claimed the title on seven occasions.
They are used to performing under pressure, and with this effectively being a two-legged knockout tie, there is little room for mistakes, and any lapse in concentration could prove costly.
With only a short journey across the South African border, Ouaddou’s side benefits from the fact that the Lesotho outfit lacks a stadium meeting CAF standards, similar to the national team’s situation during the recent 2026 World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana.
This setup allows Pirates to stay fresh for their midweek clash against Siwelele FC next Tuesday at the same venue before returning to Orlando Stadium for the Champions League second leg next Saturday.
Momentum proved crucial last season. Jose Riveiro’s Pirates only suffered their first defeat in the penultimate round of the competition, and the 3-2 semi-final second-leg loss against Pyramids FC was their first, and it proved costly as it led to their elimination.
Their strong run from the preliminary rounds provided consistency and rhythm. This weekend’s match is therefore vital to establishing momentum and building a platform for the tougher opponents that lie ahead in the competition.
