Mamelodi Sundowns sent a resounding message across the continent on Sunday with a commanding 5-1 victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.
However, head coach Miguel Cardoso remains vigilant, insisting that the job is far from finished as the team prepares for the second leg later this week in Pretoria.
The emphatic victory not only showcased Sundowns’ attacking prowess but also reinforced their ambitions in Africa’s premier club competition. After finishing as runners-up last season, the South African giants are determined to reclaim the trophy they last hoisted in 2016.
Despite the emphatic result, Cardoso has chosen humility over hubris.
“My impression is that we took it very seriously, that we related to a need that we had to approach tactically very clearly, considering the study we had from Remo Stars. It’s good because the first goal we scored is from the one place that we knew we could use to find a free player to kick (pass),” said Cardoso.
“It’s not South Africa playing; it’s not Bafana Bafana — it’s Mamelodi Sundowns,” he emphasised, reminding everyone that football is unpredictable, and the second leg remains crucial. “The qualifying round is not over, and Mamelodi Sundowns will be professional and focused in the return leg.”
Cardoso’s tactical insight was evident as his players successfully countered Remo Stars’ man-marking approach, finding gaps and creating opportunities.
“To score five goals against a team that is the champions of Nigeria is not easy,” he reflected. “Of course, we could not have conceded any, but I think it’s fair to take this result.”
“The scoreline gives us an advantage, but we respect football. To respect football means we must approach the second match as seriously as possible,” Cardoso explained, underscoring that the journey is far from complete.
He praised his squad’s preparation and acknowledged the defensive lapse that allowed Remo Stars to find the back of the net.
Emphasising the importance of a solid fan base, Cardoso made a heartfelt appeal for supporters to stand by the team. He believes unity and commitment are essential for both the players and fans as they chase continental glory.
“Our shirt shows the words Ubuntu Botho. Those are the values that should regulate Mamelodi Sundowns fans at all times,” he stressed, highlighting the principles of respect, commitment, and support that underpin the club’s ethos.
Sundowns returned home on Monday, riding a wave of optimism as they head into the second leg of their Champions League qualification tie. Following a commanding performance in the first leg, they find themselves tantalisingly close to securing a spot in the coveted group stages of Africa’s premier club competition.
Sunday’s second leg will be at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, with kick-off at 3.30pm.
