Kaizer Chiefs displayed a resounding return to form on Sunday, clinching a 3-1 victory over AS Simba to secure their place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.
This remarkable triumph at Dobsonville Stadium not only marked a significant milestone for the club but also introduced fans to a new hero in 24-year-old Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro, whose debut goal delighted the faithful and set the tone for the match.
Under the guidance of co-coach Cedric Kaze, who exuded optimism following the match, Ighodaro’s performance proved an inspiring addition to a team yearning for a potent attacking presence.
“It’s not easy to find that kind of striker,” Kaze remarked, emphasising that Ighodaro’s hold-up play and scoring ability are precisely the attributes the team had been lacking.
The game commenced at a blistering pace, with Ighodaro finding the net just three minutes in, igniting a wave of excitement amongst the supporters. Defender Zitha Kwinika soon joined him on the scoresheet in the 14th minute, followed by Congolese winger Glody Lilepo, who secured a third goal in the 26th minute.
This lightning start ensured that Chiefs cruised into half-time with a commanding advantage.
After the match, Kaze reflected on his squad’s collective effort, acknowledging their determination and the positive mindset they adopted from the first whistle.
“We can see how happy the fans are. We went into the game with the right mentality, and I’m very happy for the club and the players, who put in a tremendous effort,” Kaze said.
This victory not only represents a jubilant return to the CAF Confederation Cup for Chiefs but also ends a painful 12-year wait for fans eager to see their team thrive on the continental stage. Having previously faced setbacks, this qualification signals renewed ambition for Kaizer Chiefs following their Nedbank Cup success last season.
The excitement doesn’t end here. Chiefs will return to local action as they prepare to face Durban City FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.
The squad’s performance on Sunday, buoyed by the addition of Ighodaro, suggests they may be ready to reclaim their dominance both domestically and on the continental stage.
