As the countdown begins for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has made a bold inclusion in his final 23-man squad: young and promising Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
At just 19 years old, Mbokazi is already carving a name for himself and is reportedly viewed by Broos as having the potential to shine on European soil. Having quickly established himself as a central figure in the Pirates’ defence since his promotion in January, Mbokazi has been instrumental in the club’s pursuits this season.
In addition to his surge in performance, he has also been appointed one of the deputy captains for the current campaign, leading the team with composure and skill on several occasions.
His remarkable journey has seen him traverse the challenging stages of professional football while making high-profile appearances in critical matches.
The upcoming international break sees Bafana Bafana facing Lesotho on 5 September, followed by a highly anticipated clash against fierce rivals Nigeria on 9 September. These matches are pivotal in the team’s quest for World Cup qualification, and Broos is keen to utilise the talents of young players like Mbokazi.
Broos, praised for mentoring emerging talent, noted that this current national team camp will be Mbokazi’s second appearance, building on the positive impressions he made during international friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique earlier this year.
The coach has highlighted solid development pathways for players like Mbokazi, saying, “This is a guy who has to go to Europe next year,” underscoring that if he continues on his current trajectory, interest from overseas clubs will not be far behind.
Last season, Mbokazi’s impressive performance earned him a nomination for the Nedbank Cup’s Most Promising Player, and he was a nominee for the Premiership’s Young Player of the Season award, an accolade that eventually went to his teammate Relebohile Mofokeng.
Now, Broos believes the up-and-coming star is poised to encounter even greater success. However, the seasoned coach advises Mbokazi to remain grounded, asserting the benefits of staying with Pirates for another year, especially with their participation in the CAF Champions League looming.
As he navigates the pressure of professional football, humility seems to be a trait that sets Mbokazi apart. Described by Broos as “a nice guy” who blends well within the team, his character—combined with his talent—positions him as a valuable asset on both club and international stages.
Now all eyes will be on Mbokazi as he takes the field for Bafana Bafana, the future of South African football resting on the shoulders of one of its most promising talents.
Among the foreign-based players called up are Hannover’s Ime Okon, who scored his first goal for the club after transferring from SuperSport United, Burnley striker Lyle Foster, and FCSB defender Siyabonga Ngezana.
Currently, South Africa sit at the top of their qualifying group with 13 points from six matches, holding a five-point lead over Rwanda and Benin on eight points each. Nigeria are on seven, followed by Lesotho on six and Zimbabwe on four.
