For 22 long years, Bafana Bafana have struggled to clear a hurdle that has seemed just out of reach. Now, they stand perfectly placed to finally secure qualification for the world’s biggest stage, with the 2026 Fifa World Cup set to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This would mark their first qualification earned on the pitch since 2002, as in 2010 they qualified courtesy of being hosts when South Africa made history as the first African nation to host the tournament.
While near-misses have defined their past campaigns, this one feels different. Under Hugo Broos’ guidance, the national team has shown remarkable progress, giving South Africans genuine belief.
Two decisive fixtures now await. First up is Lesotho on Friday evening at the Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium (18:00 kickoff), followed by a high-stakes showdown against Nigeria next Tuesday. These two games could define South Africa’s path to the finals—and with a five-point lead at the top of Group C, they hold the advantage.
Here we will look at the five players who could prove crucial in shaping that campaign:
At just 19-year old, the Orlando Pirates defender has already shown maturity beyond his years. Fresh from an impressive display against Mozambique in a recent friendly, Mbokazi looks set for another stern test.
With several first-choice defenders — including his club captain, Nkosinathi Sibisi — sidelined through injury, the teenager may find himself thrust into the starting line-up, a challenge he seems prepared to embrace.
Back in the English Premier League with Burnley after their immediate return from relegation, Foster remains a central figure for both club and country. Though injuries disrupted his rhythm last season, his experience at the highest level makes him invaluable for Bafana.
In matches where fine margins will matter, the 25-year-old striker’s composure and pedigree in one of the toughest leagues in the world could be decisive.

Hugo Broos has stuck by his trusted core even when some players have not been at their peak, and Mofokeng is a prime example. The Orlando Pirates midfielder scored the last time Bafana beat Lesotho 2-0, underlining his ability to deliver in key moments.
While not currently at his free-flowing best, he is always capable of producing a spark, and with his knack for rising to big occasions, the stage is set for him to shine once again.

Since making the switch to Al Ettifaq in the rapidly expanding Saudi Pro League, the former Pirates winger has been enjoying a career upswing. One of the most exciting young talents in South Africa, Nkota has already made his mark by finding the back of the net for his new club.
With steady growth over the past two seasons, this could be his chance to establish himself as a regular starter for Bafana.

Lesotho will look to their reliable goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane to keep them in the contest. At 27, the former Orbit College shot-stopper has gained valuable top-flight experience, recently playing a key role in guiding his club to promotion through the PSL playoffs.
Against a Bafana Bafana side expected to create plenty of chances, Moerane is likely to face sustained pressure, and he remains a crucial figure who could stand between South Africa and their desired victory.
