Two headline-grabbing Premier Soccer League goalkeepers, Zimbabwean Washington Arubi of Marumo Gallants and Rwanda’s Fiacre Ntwari of Kaizer Chiefs, may have more influence on the upcoming World Cup qualifiers than any forward or midfielder could imagine.
As Bafana Bafana prepares to embark on the final fixtures of its World Cup qualifying journey, these two stand in its path, potentially threatening to derail the national team’s aspirations.
Last weekend, Arubi showcased his exceptional goalkeeping skills as Gallants advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout Cup. In a gripping encounter at Lucas Moripe Stadium, the 36-year-old shot-stopper was pivotal in a dramatic penalty shootout against the 10-man Mamelodi Sundowns.
After the match ended in a goalless draw following extra time, Arubi stepped up to save three penalties, securing a 7-6 victory for his team. His performance not only propelled Gallants forward in the tournament but also made headlines across the nation.
On the other hand, Ntwari made waves earlier in the Carling Knockout match against Stellenbosch FC by saving the opening penalty during a shootout. However, it was his pre-game antics that caught the eye—his refusal to be substituted raised eyebrows.
Rwanda’s national team coach, Adel Amrouche, stood by his keeper, asserting that Ntwari’s focus and performance warranted his presence on the pitch. This backing could serve to bolster Ntwari’s confidence as he prepares to face the South African side.
The conflict surrounding Ntwari’s decision may have added an extra layer of motivation for the goalkeeper, particularly given the high stakes involved. Local fans fear that the 24-year-old will harness this opportunity to prove his worth not just to his team but also to Chiefs’ supporters who anxiously await his return.
His post-match Instagram post—“I can, I must, I will”—reflects a determined spirit, one that he will undoubtedly carry into the clash against Bafana Bafana in Mbombela on Tuesday.
Arubi has emphasised his nation’s determination despite recent struggles, declaring that they have the spirit to rise again. Although the upcoming game holds little mathematical significance for Zimbabwe, it presents a significant opportunity for pride and rebirth on the international stage.
With the World Cup dream on the line, the eyes of South Africa will surely be wary of the actions of Arubi and Ntwari as they vie for supremacy in the last line of defence.
