Former Kaizer Chiefs star Shane McGregor has gone to bat for embattled head coach Nasreddine Nabi, whose first season with the Soweto giants has been a disaster.
With a few games left in the season, Chiefs find themselves in a disappointing 9th place in the league, but this coming Saturday’s Nedbank Cup should offer some comfort for the club’s suffering supporters.
Despite their exploits in the Nedbank Cup, Chiefs have been woeful, and that has put pressure on Nabi, with many speculating if he’ll still be at the helm when the new campaign rolls around in a few months.
However, McGregor, who played for Chiefs between 1987 and 1994, has offered a different take on the club’s struggles. According to the former striker, anyone would struggle to get Chiefs winning with the players they currently have on their books. Even Manchester City’s tactician Pep Guardiola.
“You know what, I’m going to put it to you this way, you can bring Pep Guardiola, you can bring any top coach, but if you don’t have the material to work with, what do you do? That’s the problem,” McGregor said, according to Hollywoodbets Sports.
“I just feel that they bought mediocre players, and they haven’t bought quality; it’s showing.
“If that is the quality of Chiefs players, it’s the problem. And as we have seen, it’s the problem.”
McGregor went on to add that Nabi’s record at his previous clubs proved he was a good coach, and was capable of winning silverware if he was surrounded by the right players. According to the 61-year-old, Nabi wasn’t to blame for the club’s woes.
“I don’t think it’s got much to do with the coach. I think he is a decent coach. You don’t win trophies all over the African continent if you are not a decent coach,” McGregor continued.
“But obviously you need players, that’s the big thing. I just feel that Chiefs don’t have the quality players at the moment… They need a lot of players, I think a minimum of six players need to come into the squad. You need to overhaul it.
“Chiefs need a goal scorer, because if you look at it, the guy (Glody Lilelpo) who just came in and is their joint top scorer in the league. They are going to need at least two players up front. In the midfield, you’ve got guys like (Sibongiseni) Mthethwa, are they quality for Chiefs? I don’t think so. Look, he tries, and does his best, but I don’t think he is quality for Chiefs.”
