The 2024/25 campaign has ushered in a new generation of exciting young talent, especially in midfield, where numerous players not only rose to the occasion but flourished when it mattered most. At the same time, seasoned professionals ontinued to impress, delivering high-calibre performances without letting up.
With the midfield proving to be a hotbed of excellence, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has found himself spoilt for choice, as several standout players made compelling cases for national selection.
Here, we highlight five midfielders who have emerged as strong contenders for the coveted PSL Midfielder of the Season honour.
The ever-reliable and experienced midfielder delivered yet another stellar campaign, acting as the vital link between defence and attack for Mamelodi Sundowns.
Renowned for his thunderous strikes from both open play and set-pieces, Mokoena was once again instrumental in helping Sundowns secure their eighth consecutive league title, featuring in 22 matches this season. With two goals and three assists to his name, what truly stands out is his consistency and the quality he brings to set-piece situations, providing both control and attacking threat.
At just 20-years old, the Pirates winger has shown maturity beyond his years. He has carried the weight of expectation at times, becoming the go-to man for Orlando Pirates when moments of inspiration were needed — and he delivered whenever called upon.
Skilful, fearless, and explosive on the ball, Mofokeng was central to the Buccaneers’ attacking play. With five goals this season, his impact in possession and the danger he poses when driving forward made him one of the most threatening midfielders in the league.
The 26-year old had a transformative impact for the reigning champions and emerged not just as a midfield presence but also as the league’s top scorer, earning him the coveted Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot.
Much of his influence was felt in the early stages of the campaign, where his goals helped fend off a fast-starting Pirates side. In scintillating form, the Brazilian midfielder consistently tormented defences, finishing the season with 16 goals and nine assists in 26 appearances. With those numbers, few would argue if the Midfielder of the Season honour ends up in his hands.
Despite Chippa United's challenges in maintaining a Top 8 position, Kwayiba shone as a bright spark in midfield, producing a standout season worthy of recognition.
The 25-year-old, who is reportedly set for a move away from the Chilli Boys, brought versatility and an eye for goal to the table. He scored six goals and registered one assist in 25 appearances — numbers that underscore his consistent influence even as his team struggled at times.
Arguably the most complete of the contenders, the Sekhukhune United midfielder had a widespread impact—both in orchestrating play from the middle and threatening the opposition’s goal.
The 28-year-old was a regular presence across 26 matches, tallying four goals and an impressive 11 assists. His pace, control, and attacking intent made life difficult for Betway Premiership defenders throughout the season. Makgalwa played a key role in driving Sekhukhune's pursuit of a CAF Confederation Cup spot—a campaign that ultimately saw the Limpopo side finish in a highly respectable fourth place.
