Mamelodi Sundowns undergo squad overhaul after key departures of midfielders

With two key players departing, Mamelodi Sundowns are set for a significant overhaul as they look continue their dominance in the new season.

On Sunday, Sundowns announced the departure of two of their long-serving midfielders, Lebohang Maboe and Rivaldo Coetzee. The duo have been released following the expiry of their contracts, marking the end of an era as the club prepares for a fresh chapter.

Maboe, a prominent figure in Sundowns’ midfield for the past seven years, spent the latter part of last season on loan at SuperSport United, where he made a crucial impact by playing 16 matches, scoring once and assisting on two occasions. His contributions were pivotal in helping SuperSport narrowly avoid relegation during a tense finale to the season.

The 30-year-old joined Sundowns in the 2017/18 campaign from Maritzburg United — now known as Durban City FC — and during his time at the club, he collected numerous accolades, including the African Football League title in 2023.

Reflecting on his tenure, Sundowns said in a statement: “After seven memorable years, 12 trophies, 183 appearances and that unforgettable league-winning hat-trick, Sundowns bid farewell to Lebohang Maboe. We wish you nothing but success as you enter your next chapter.”

Similarly, Rivaldo Coetzee’s career at Sundowns was blighted by injury, which severely limited his playing time. The talented defender joined the club from Ajax Cape Town in 2017, amassing a remarkable 14 trophies during his stay.

However, a series of setbacks prevented him from making a notable impact in recent campaigns, leading to his release as Sundowns restructure their squad.

Traditionally active in the transfer market, Sundowns will be eager to secure players capable of helping them achieve their ambitious targets after a mixed campaign last season.

While the club successfully defended their PSL title, their aspirations for the Nedbank Cup fell short when they were eliminated by Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-finals. Additionally, their quest for continental glory ended at the hands of Pyramids FC of Egypt, who went on to claim their first CAF Champions League crown.

As the dust settles on these departures, many eyes will be on Sundowns as they embark on a new season filled with promise and potential, bolstered by a fresh influx of talent as they strive to continue their reign at the summit of South African football.

Sundowns are set to begin their pre-season preparations on 21 July. This year, the club is breaking from tradition by remaining closer to home, opting for a domestic training camp in Rustenburg rather than travelling abroad.

By convening in Rustenburg, Sundowns aim to create a focused environment conducive to training and development. The players will have the opportunity to work closely with the coaching team, fine-tuning tactics and strategies designed to bolster their on-field performances.
