After ending their long trophy drought last season, Kaizer Chiefs now face the challenge of building real momentum.
The pressure is back on – not just to win, but to play with purpose, consistency, and identity. With the new season fast approaching, Amakhosi fans are once again filled with cautious optimism, hoping this is the year their team finally turns potential into dominance.
With the new season on the horizon, IOL Sport takes a look at five things Kaizer Chiefs supporters will be hoping for.
Kaizer Chiefs are desperate for a striker who knows how to score goals.
The team struggled last season because they didn’t know how to put the ball in the back of the net. In many games, Nabi’s men were the better team.
They saw more of the ball than the opposition and created more scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, countless chances went abegging. If new striker Flavio Silva can score regularly, Chiefs will be good.
Chiefs fans will also be hoping for some consistency between the sticks.
Fiacre Ntwari began last season as the number one, but by the time the campaign ended, he had lost his place.
Bruce Bvuma also didn’t grab his opportunities with both hands, and neither did Brandon Petersen. This is an area the club has not addressed during the transfer window, and fans will be hoping one of the three keepers can find some form in the new season.
For large parts of last season, Kaizer Chiefs resembled a playground of youngsters who needed some guidance. Gaston Sirino should have been that player, and it looked like he was up to the challenge early on. But for some reason, it just didn’t work out.
The likes of Wandile Duba, Mduduzi Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Samkelo Zwane have bucketloads of talent, but they couldn’t handle the pressure placed on their young shoulders.
The club’s faithful supporters will be looking to new signings Siphesihle Ndlovu and Ethan Chislett to provide that leadership.
Nasreddine Nabi has been at the club for a year now, and the fans will be desperate for the club to start showing some potential.
They had their moments last season, but they still struggled.
Some sections of the fanbase have already started turning against the Tunisian tactician, so he will be under pressure to start delivering this season.
The club broke a 10-year trophy drought when they beat Orlando Pirates in the final of the Nedbank Cup last season and will be hoping to win another one.
Kaizer Chiefs winning a trophy is not only good for the club, it’s good for South African football, as the majority of fans in the country support the club.
When Chiefs fans are happy, South Africa is happy.
