Kaizer Chiefs on Thursday announced the departure of defender Bongani Sam.
Chiefs confirmed the news on its WhatsApp channel.
A day after Sam celebrated his 28th birthday, Chiefs decided to make the move official.
In a short message accompanied by a photo of the player, Chiefs confirmed the news.
“After just one season, Kaizer Chiefs have amicably agreed to part ways with defender Bongani Sam.
The Gqeberha native joined the team from Orlando Pirates in July 2024. Wishing Bongani all the best. #Amakhosi4Life”
Sam joined Chiefs just over a year ago, from Orlando Pirates. Switching Soweto Giants allegiances is normally a risky move for players’ reputations, and Sam’s decision proved to be such.
The big reason that Sam’s spell at Chiefs went badly is that he picked up an injury during pre-season preparation and was never able to make an official appearance for the club.
Sam was still under contract at the Naturena club for another two years.
The news comes just after Chiefs announced earlier in the week that midfielder Tebogo Potsane was also leaving. Of course, the club threw in the line to describe the move ‘parted ways amicably’.
The 31-year-old had been with Chiefs for two years since joining in July 2023.
“We thank him for his contributions and wish him all the best in the future,” said Chiefs in a statement.
Chiefs have finished outside the top eight for the last two seasons in a row, and under coach Nasreddine Nabi the mighty AmaKhosi will be hoping for a much better showing this time around in the Betway Premiership.
