Orlando Pirates’ new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou plans to develop Oswin Appollis into a standout player as he embarks on his coaching journey with the Buccaneers.
The 23-year-old winger made a sensational debut last Saturday, shining brightly during the team’s 1-0 victory over Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-finals, signalling his potential to become a pivotal figure for the club this season.
Despite Appollis’ exhilarating performance, which showcased his ability to influence the game, Ouaddou remains grounded in his expectations and objectives for the promising player.
“We need to discipline him,” he stated firmly.
Having previously faced Appollis during his time at Marumo Gallants, Ouaddou appreciates the youngster’s attributes but stresses the importance of shaping his developmental path. Now at the helm of Pirates, he aims to implement a clear tactical framework to elevate Appollis’ skill set.
“I know his qualities, and I will not change him,” Ouaddou explained.
“However, I want to bring him to the highest level as both a former professional and a coach. We need to expose him to some tactical workshops.”
This hands-on approach was evident during pre-season training, where the coaching staff put Appollis through various drills to expand his versatility – moving beyond mere transitions and enabling him to fulfil multiple roles on the pitch.
During the match against Polokwane City, Ouaddou opted to substitute Appollis after 60 minutes to prevent overexertion, a move which reflected the coach’s strategic planning for a player still finding his feet at the club.
“He can come between the lines, make runs from deep, and change sides,” Ouaddou elaborated. “I want a dynamic player, not someone who stands on one side and waits for the ball.”
The early signs are promising for Appollis, who has been lauded as a quality signing. If he continues to display the form that wowed fans in the MTN8, he stands a good chance of becoming the Buccaneers’ standout performer this season – potentially even earning a call-up to the national squad ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
The excitement surrounding his career trajectory adds to the anticipation among fans eager to see how Ouaddou’s guidance will shape the team.
Supporters have rallied behind the coach, inspired by his vision and approach – the embodiment of a revitalised Pirates. Enthusiastic crowds have flocked to matches, boosting team morale and creating an electric atmosphere that has sparked a renewed passion for the game.
Players previously constrained by inconsistency have shown newfound resilience and drive, buoyed by Ouaddou’s progress-oriented methods.
Pirates’ faithful can rest assured that this chapter under coach Ouaddou may well be the rebirth they have long awaited, as they rally together to cheer on their team and aspire for greatness once again.
