Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso is calling on his side to lay down a marker when they face Chippa United in their Betway Premiership opener at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday (kick-off at 3pm).
Last year, Cardoso enjoyed a stellar debut season at Chloorkop, leading the Brazilians to a record-extending eighth league title, finishing 12 points clear of nearest challengers Orlando Pirates.
The defending champions have started the new campaign dominantly, cruising to a 4-0 win over Richards Bay in the MTN8 quarter-final last week — a result that set up a semi-final showdown with Orlando Pirates.
Sundowns are aiming to replicate their strong start from last season, when they won their first four league matches before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Polokwane City in October 2024 — one of just three losses in the entire campaign.
Historically, Sundowns have enjoyed an excellent record against Chippa United, winning their last seven encounters and scoring 15 goals while conceding just once. They recorded identical 3-0 victories both home and away against the Chilli Boys in the 2024–25 season.
Chippa, meanwhile, started brightly last season with four wins from their opening 10 matches, collecting 14 points. However, a poor run of form late in the campaign saw them collect just one point from their final five games, ultimately finishing 11th and missing out on MTN8 qualification.
Following a coaching reshuffle, Thabo September — who succeeded Kwanele Kopo mid-season — has since left the club. Sinethemba Badela now takes over as head coach for the 2025/26 campaign.
Speaking ahead of the season opener, Cardoso emphasised the importance of making an early statement.
"Any club that aims to compete at the highest level must show respect for every opponent. The legacy of Sundowns demands consistency and a winning mentality," he said.
"I told the players that making a statement in the first league game is vital. We know Chippa United have been preparing in Joburg, but it’s hard to predict what they'll bring. Regardless, I wish their new coach a successful journey — just not at our expense this weekend."
Chippa United midfielder Goodman Mosele returns for a second loan spell after a quiet season with Orlando Pirates. The 25-year-old made 22 league appearances in his previous stint with the Chilli Boys and brings valuable experience, having also featured for Baroka in the top flight.
On the Sundowns side, all eyes will be on Fawaaz Basadien, who joined from Stellenbosch during the off-season. The 28-year-old left-back was a key figure under Steve Barker last season, tallying three goals and five assists in 25 matches.
However, competition for the left-back position at Sundowns is fierce, with Aubrey Modiba, Divine Lunga, and Terrence Mashego all vying for minutes.
