Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have opened their league campaign in flawless fashion with three wins from three – and now they’ve set their sights on the ultimate prize..
According to assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef, who has been in charge of the team in head coach Nasreddine Nabi’s absence, the club wants to go all the way and dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns as the kings of South African football.
“We have our target inside the team between the players and the technical staff,” Youssef said after Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Richards Bay, as quoted by iDiski Times.
“And it’s written in our meeting room inside the village. We know what we need to do, and we keep it between us… For us, we take it game by game, we don’t think about anything, we don’t have any pressure. [But] for sure, Kaizer Chiefs is one of the biggest teams in South Africa – if we play in the league, we play to win the league.”
That is a big claim, but as one of the country’s most popular clubs, with loyal supporters across South Africa, Chiefs have every right to target the highest honours. Hearing a coach say this is sure to excite Amakhosi faithful, who have had to watch their team struggle over the last two seasons.
However, the statement could backfire if results falter. While Chiefs have started the season with three wins, their performances haven’t always been convincing. Many, however, will point to the club taking small, positive steps forward.
The squad has also seen solid improvements ahead of the season. Nkanyiso Shinga, Flavio Silve, Ethan Chislett, Paseka Mako, Thabiso Monyane, and Siphesihle Ndlovu all joined before the campaign kicked off. Last week, the club concluded deals for Asanele Velebayi, Etiosa Ighodaro, and Luke Baartman. Chiefs will be confident that these players can be taken to the next level.
If Kaizer Chiefs can maintain their winning momentum and integrate their new signings effectively, they have every chance of turning ambition into reality. With a clear target, a motivated squad, and the backing of their passionate supporters, the stage is set for Amakhosi to challenge for the crown and remind the PSL why they remain one of South Africa’s footballing giants.
