Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou expressed his gratitude to the club’s medical staff after Thabiso Lebitso marked his return to top-flight football with a commanding performance against his former club, Chippa United, on Saturday.

The Buccaneers secured a resounding 3-0 victory at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, heading into the international break on a triumphant note.

In what was his first start of the season after an injury lay-off that kept him sidelined since December, right back Lebitso showed no signs of rustiness. His impactful display was a crucial part of Pirates’ convincing win against the Chilli Boys.

He was substituted late in the second half by teammate Thabiso Shandu, having demonstrated his readiness to contribute effectively to the team’s ambitions.

“Yes, of course, first, I must congratulate our medical staff and our performance department, because they did a great job to allow him, push him to come back. He had a fantastic performance, likewise the boys,” said Ouaddou, clearly pleased with his squad’s effort and Lebitso’s return.

The victory not only solidified Pirates’ position in the league table but also affirmed Ouaddou’s strategy as the side regrouped after a difficult start to the season. Despite the comfortable margin, the coach was vocal about his desire for even more goals.

“I’m happy about the performance of the boys; we wanted to come here to take the three points. It was something I said before the game,” he said.

However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s passing game towards the final stages, insisting on a more aggressive approach

"We must understand that we have to give thanks to the fans, but I’m not somebody who likes to enjoy like that, I like goals. If we can put five, six goals, we must put six goals,” Ouaddou remarked.

The win was particularly significant as Pirates sought to remain close in the league standings to rivals Sekhukhune United and Kaizer Chiefs.

“I think it was an important win before the break,” he added.

“At the same time, to stay closer to our rivals and to be at the top of the league table. We have some ambitions with the club, so it was important to come and grab nine points before the break.”

Looking ahead, Pirates face a critical clash against Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 final on 13 September, making the momentum gained from this match even more vital. With individuals like Lebitso returning to form and the team’s overall endeavour, Pirates’ supporters will be optimistic about what lies ahead.
