The rivalry between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs has spilled into the digital space after the Buccaneers responded with a cheeky dig at the head coach drama at Naturena.
Chiefs confirmed this week that head coach Nasreddine Nabi is currently not with the team, only stating in a press release that discussions with the Tunisian are “ongoing.” Nabi's sudden absence has left Amakhosi in limbo less than two months into the new season.
Pirates' social media team wasted little time in seizing the moment. The Soweto giants released an animated video on their official platforms mocking Chiefs’ coaching situation — a direct response to comments made earlier this year by Amakhosi team manager Bobby Motaung.
Back in April, a video circulated of Motaung reflecting on Pirates’ then-coach José Riveiro, who was preparing to depart after three seasons and five trophies.
“They are not changing anything next season,” Motaung quipped at the time, suggesting stability at Chiefs while their rivals faced transition.
Ironically, Chiefs stuck by Nabi through a ninth-place league finish last season and a Nedbank Cup triumph, but his tenure has now seemingly ended abruptly, with the club citing “internal processes” as the reason.
Pirates, who replaced Riveiro with Abdeslam Ouaddou and already lifted the MTN8 under his guidance, could not resist a playful jab at their cross-town rivals’ misfortune.
The exchange adds another layer to an already fierce rivalry, with both clubs vying for dominance domestically and on the continent.
Chiefs are in Angola preparing for their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round tie against Kabuscorp without Nabi, while Pirates begin their CAF Champions League journey against Lioli FC in Bloemfontein.
For all the humour traded online, the reality is that both teams face pressing challenges in Africa. But in true Soweto Derby fashion, bragging rights are never far from the surface — even off the pitch.
