Orlando Pirates midfielder Selaelo Rasebotja has been on the sidelines since the start of this season, but as he works toward a return to the pitch, he remains positive and focused on making an impact when he comes back.

Before his injury, the former Supersport United player had yet to secure a regular starting spot in the Buccaneers’ team following his move from Matsatsantsa a Pitori.

Under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who has been keen to give players opportunities, Rasebotja has placed no pressure on himself to rush his comeback, instead focusing on a full and strong return to contribute to the team’s success.

“I am still in the early stages of my rehab.

“There is no pressure for me to come back, but I just have to take the right steps because it was a very bad injury. I am happy that everything went well and I hope to recover just in time to return and contribute to the club.”

The 24-year-old’s injury came at a pivotal time. After getting glimpses of action under former coach Jose Riveiro last season, he was poised to show Ouaddou what he could offer, but he has yet to feature as he continues his recovery.

With competition growing following the club’s recruitment of new talent, Rasebotja knows it will be vital to come back fully fit. He joins a list of players who have yet to start the season, including last campaign’s PSL Midfielder of the Season Makhehlene Makaula, and so far he is satisfied with his progress.

“It was sad to get an injury at that time.

“But I am a firm believer that nothing happens by chance, and it might be preparation for something bigger that is coming. My focus now is to stay well mentally and ensure that I go through my rehab as best I can so that I can come back and contribute to the club.”

Rasebotja also praised the support he has received from the club.

“The club as a whole has been supportive of the guys in casualty. They put resources at our disposal to ensure we are well taken care of, especially on the mental side.

"There are frequent conversations about how we are feeling, and it feels like family. As a person, you appreciate that, and it gives you the drive to do well in your rehab and repay the support that has been given to you.

“The guys have also been superb in making us feel part of the team. Sometimes when you are injured, you feel left out, but that hasn’t been the case here. It’s a really good environment.”

In his absence, youngster Cemran Dansin has begun getting minutes on the pitch after graduating from the youth ranks. Rasebotja has been impressed with his performances and believes he has a bright future.

“Cemran has been doing well for himself, and I am happy to see where he is now. I have seen him from the School of Excellence—we come from the same school. He has been doing well, and I hope he carries on with this momentum. Good things are coming up for him.”
