Durban City climbed to third on the Betway Premiership log after a hard-fought comeback win over Magesi at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday night.
KwaZulu-Natal side turned a halftime deficit into victory thanks to second-half strikes from Samkelo Maseko, Saziso Magawana, and Letsie Koapeng.
The win was another statement of intent from Gavin Hunt’s side, who continue to combine resilience with attacking flair.
Despite falling behind in the first half, Durban City regrouped at the break and imposed themselves on the game in the second period, controlling possession and creating multiple chances.
“I thought we played with good energy, attitude as well as tenacity and speed, but we went a goal down and that gave them a boost,” Hunt said.
“But when we scored the equaliser, the game really opened up for us, and even though we had missed chances before, we converted these ones.
“All in all, the effort was important. Yes, we obviously didn’t want to concede, but we did, and they’re a very physical side, so they gave us one hell of a game. We needed to keep our shape and discipline to get the result.”
Durban City’s ability to maintain composure under pressure was evident as Maseko netted the first second-half goal, setting the tone for the comeback. Magawana and Koapeng then added decisive strikes, capitalising on precise passing and clinical finishing, while the defence remained organised to limit Magesi’s threats
The team's tactical flexibility was also on display. Hunt’s second-half adjustments allowed fresh legs to influence the game, particularly in midfield and attack, where energy and sharpness proved decisive. His players showed mental toughness, converting their chances and keeping Magesi’s physicality in check..
This result underscores the growing confidence of Durban City, who have now demonstrated they can respond quickly when behind and dictate games against competitive Premiership sides. Their disciplined approach and attacking efficiency make them a team to watch as the season progresses.
With momentum firmly on their side, Durban City will now look to build on this performance and continue their push toward the top of the Betway Premiership table. Hunt’s emphasis on energy, discipline, and composure appears to be paying dividends as his side climbs into contention.
Next on the agenda for the Cityzens is another home contest against Polokwane City in the Carling Knockout Cup next weekend.
