Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has sent a heartfelt message to the club’s supporters, urging them to back the team as it embarks on a significant rebuilding journey.

This call to action comes on the heels of Sundowns’ impressive 4-1 Premiership victory over Richards Bay on Saturday night, which marked a successful response following a midweek setback against Lamontville Golden Arrows.

After tasting defeat for the first time in the Betway Premiership this season, Sundowns regained their position at the top of the league table. However, the victory came amidst ongoing challenges as the team integrates several new players into its ranks.

“I just want to tell the Sundowns family again to support the team. It’s just a team with a lot of new players that have just arrived. Some of them are still finding their feet, and the team is growing. It’s going to grow,” Cardoso explained, reflecting on the evolving dynamics within his squad.

Echoing sentiments of optimism, Cardoso acknowledged the difficulties inherent in the team’s recent performance setbacks but remained focused on the growth potential. “Obviously, sometimes setbacks don’t help, but that’s got a lot to do with and a lot to achieve,” he added.

After the disheartening loss against Golden Arrows, Cardoso’s instructions to his players were clear: bring the best emotions to the pitch, along with commitment and concentration. The result against Richards Bay demonstrated that the message resonated, as Sundowns dominated the match.

Cardoso noted the challenges of the pitch conditions, acknowledging that it made playing their desired style of football difficult. Nonetheless, he commended his players for starting the match with confidence, stressing that an early goal was crucial to preventing self-doubt.

“You can have a bad day, but you cannot have two,” he remarked, underscoring the necessity of resilience in the wake of their recent defeat.

Cardoso pointed out that with a busy schedule of fixtures every three days, having a potent bench was integral to the team’s overall strength and prospects.

With three points secured, Sundowns now find themselves at the summit of the league standings, even though they have played one match more than their closest rivals, Sekhukhune United. Cardoso was keen to emphasise the importance of a strong start in matches to build confidence and momentum, particularly as they continue to face challenging fixtures every three days.

The coach reflected on the importance of depth in the squad, stating: “Having a potent bench becomes a priority and strengthens the team holistically.” With various players like Themba Zwane and Thapelo Morena still on the road to recovery, Cardoso is optimistic that the return of key personnel will bolster the team’s stability and options from the bench.

As Sundowns prepares for the challenges ahead, Cardoso’s call for unity among supporters serves as a reminder of the collective spirit that defines the club. It is a journey of resilience, growth, and ambition that he hopes fans will embrace wholeheartedly.

Next Saturday, Sundowns will return to the Lucas Moripe Stadium, where they will face Marumo Gallants in the first round of the Carling Knockout. The Brazilians will look to capitalise on home advantage, aiming for a favourable start in the tournament.

Richards Bay will open their Carling Knockout journey against Chippa United at the Richards Bay Stadium next Sunday. The Natal Rich Boys’ pursuit of glory also provides them with the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a raucous home crowd.
