Following a vital 1-0 victory over the weekend against Angolan side Kabuscorp SCP in the preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup, Kaizer Chiefs turn their attention back to the Betway Premiership.
Chiefs will face AmaZulu at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening, hoping to keep their positive momentum rolling ahead of an important stretch in both domestic and continental competitions.
AmaZulu, under the guidance of former Kaizer Chiefs legend Arthur Zwane, have had a mixed start to their season. Currently sitting ninth on the log with 11 points from seven matches, they have achieved three wins, two draws, and two losses. The clash marks an opportunity for both teams to make a statement as they head into the October FIFA international break.
Chiefs are currently positioned fifth in the league table, with 14 points accrued from their seven outings, comprising four wins, two draws, and one defeat. With the leading pack (Mamelodi Sundowns, Sekhukhune United, Durban City, Polokwane City) having played more league fixtures than Chiefs, a victory against AmaZulu is critical to ensure they remain in contention for an improved log position.
The match also serves as the final league encounter for both sides before the Carling Knockout and the international break.
It is an essential fixture for Chiefs’ momentum-building ahead of the weekend’s Carling Knockout clash against Stellenbosch FC. The coaches’ roster is expected to be bolstered with some players returning from registration constraints that limited their involvement in the previous week’s continental competition.
Stand-in co-coach Cedric Kaze shared his thoughts on the anticipation surrounding the fixture, emphasising the team’s need to convert their performances into results.
“We need to keep the momentum alive,” Kaze remarked. “It is a huge relief to go to the (CAF) next round because we must create that positive momentum in the minds of every player now.”
His statement reveals an understanding of the importance of maintaining an uplifting atmosphere within the squad after what had proven to be a challenging period, during which Chiefs failed to secure victory in three consecutive league matches.
As Kaze highlighted, every match provides an opportunity for showcasing the potential that exists within the squad, with home ground advantage offering further incentive for the players.
“Every match is an opportunity to showcase our potential, and playing at home gives us an added incentive to claim the victory,” he said, showcasing his confidence as they prepare for battle against AmaZulu.
The mood at the training ground has shifted positively after the victory against Kabuscorp, with Kaze acknowledging that players might feel lighter and more invigorated.
Nonetheless, he emphasised the importance of commitment and focus in the lead-up to the critical encounter.
“We need to do the work to keep the momentum alive, especially going into our next game against AmaZulu on Wednesday,” he concluded, painting a picture of determination as they aim to capitalise on their recent successes.
