The PSL have announced the fixtures for the Carling Knockout quarter-finals, with the spotlight firmly on Orlando Pirates as they prepare to face the defending champions, Magesi FC, at the end of October at Orlando Stadium.
The encounter between Pirates and Magesi draws particular attention, not least because it falls on an unfavourable date for the Soweto giants. On the weekend before, Pirates will play the second leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie.
In addition, Pirates have a Premier League match both before the CAF fixture and immediately after the Carling quarter-final.
Pirates will be keen to turn the tide against their opponents, having suffered an unexpected defeat at the same venue in the last-16 round of the previous year’s tournament. That day still haunts Pirates fans, who will be hoping their team can overcome Magesi and dispel any lingering doubts as they chase the elusive League Cup once again.
The quarter-final round kicks off with an all-KZN affair as Richards Bay take on Durban City at the Umhlathuze Stadium on Saturday, starting at 3pm. This match may set the tone for the knockout phase, with local pride at stake.
The following day, on Sunday, Lamontville Golden Arrows will host TS Galaxy at the King Zwelithini Stadium, also starting at 3pm. Both teams will be eager to secure their places in the semi-finals, making for a thrilling encounter.
Lastly, the quarter-final festivities will culminate on Wednesday, October 29, when Marumo Gallants take on the 2023 champions Stellenbosch FC at Dr Molemela Stadium. Both teams will be looking to leave their mark as they vie for a place in the next round.
