This Saturday’s Durban derby showdown between new boys Durban City and the pride of the KwaZulu-Natal province AmaZulu, is more than just another Betway Premiership clash. For Simo Dladla, now AmaZulu’s assistant coach, it is a reunion with familiar faces — he meets for the first time the very side he lifted from the Motsepe Foundation Championship into the big league.

The twist is that Dladla’s replacement, veteran PSL coach Gavin Hunt, has over the months been praising his predecessor’s work, noting that he built a fantastic team.

It does not end there, in his arsenal Hunt has Dladla's former lieutenant Pitso Dladla.

All that is enough to make for a scintilating encounter at the World Cup venue, the Moses Mabhida Stadium set to kick-off at 3.30pm.

To this day, there are still questions about Dladla's departure from City despite helping them get promoted.  However Hunt has come in and fitted in well with the Chatsworth-based side.

Under Hunt, City began life in the Premiership with a resilient edge. Fresh from their promotion, they’ve already shown they can grind out results, especially at home. Hunt has placed a premium on discipline and organisation, building on the strong foundations left behind by Dladla.

That has translated into a handful of solid results that have them sitting in the lower mid-table but well above early relegation fears.

AmaZulu’s campaign has been far more inconsistent. Despite sitting mid-table, their form has been patchy, with defensive lapses costing them vital points.

At times they’ve looked like top-six contenders, and at others a side still struggling for cohesion.

It is into this mix that Dladla has arrived, tasked to assist Arthur Zwane steady the ship and inject the kind of balance as he (Dladla) perfected at Durban City.

Dladla knows this City team like the back of his hand; from the players’ strengths and weaknesses, to their preferred patterns of play, even down to how they respond under pressure, few coaches in the league will walk into a match with this level of insight on their opponent.

That knowledge could play into AmaZulu’s hands. Dladla can help Zwane and Usuthu technical team tailor a game plan to exploit gaps — perhaps pushing high against defenders he knows are less comfortable under pressure, or instructing midfielders to shut down supply lines that City rely on.

For Hunt, this makes preparation trickier. He will be well aware that every move his team rehearses may be second-guessed by someone who helped design it.

The veteran coach’s challenge is to add enough unpredictability to keep AmaZulu guessing, while still maintaining the structure that has earned City early success

All of this sets the stage for a tactical chess match. Hunt’s vast PSL experience equips him to adjust in real time, something he has done throughout his career. Dladla, meanwhile, carries the priceless advantage of knowing his former squad better than anyone.
