Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef believes goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is edging closer to earning a recall to Bafana Bafana after a string of commanding performances this season.

The experienced shot-stopper has rediscovered his best form, anchoring Amakhosi’s defence with maturity and composure that has helped them navigate a challenging run of fixtures both domestically and on the continent.

His performances have reignited calls for a national team return ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will take place in Morocco between December and January.

Petersen has been central to Chiefs’ recent momentum, producing crucial saves and showing renewed leadership in a side that is beginning to find balance under Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.

The 31-year-old,recently named club captain has kept nine clean sheets across all competitions — a mark of his consistency and growing confidence.

His standout displays have come at a vital time for both club and country. As Hugo Broos prepares to finalise his squad for the continental showpiece, Petersen’s form is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Speaking after Chiefs’ 1-0 victory over Durban City at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, Ben Youssef hailed the goalkeeper’s professionalism and hunger to improve, noting that his sights are firmly set on returning to international football.

“I think every game, we say congratulations to Petersen and the goalkeeper coach for a good job he’s doing with him,” said Ben Youssef.

“The target of Petersen is to go back to Bafana Bafana to be part of the national team. He’s targeting that.”

The Tunisian coach added that Petersen’s determination and mental strength have set him apart this season.

“I think he needs to continue to work to put pressure on the coach of the national team so he can be part of the squad in the AFCON,” Ben Youssef continued.

Having last featured for Bafana Bafana in 2022, Petersen has since matured into one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the Betway Premiership.

Despite facing competition from younger options, he has responded with consistency and discipline, helping Chiefs establish one of the best defensive records in the league.

His calm presence and ability to organise his defence have also benefited Amakhosi’s younger players, with Petersen serving as a reassuring figure behind an evolving backline.

For Ben Youssef, Petersen’s journey is one of persistence — a reflection of his character and belief that performances, not reputation, earn rewards.

And with AFCON looming, the Chiefs mentor insists Petersen’s form speaks loudly enough to deserve a place among South Africa’s best.
