If you’re in the market for an action camera in South Africa, there are several good options depending on your budget.
GoPro and DJI are the heavy hitters in this segment of the market, while Volkano — like many of its products — offers the most affordable option.
With the rise of social media, more people are trying their hand at content creation, and a good action camera is an excellent addition for those starting out.
Action cameras are also great for beginners because they’re compact and draw far less attention in public compared to larger, high-end cameras.
The best camera for both budget and quality is the GoPro Hero 4K. This little powerhouse currently retails for R4,499 on sale at HiFiCorp. Weighing just 86 grams, this rugged device shoots up to 4K at 30 frames per second and offers digital image stabilization for smooth footage. This entry-level model includes many of the features found in pricier GoPro cameras, such as being waterproof up to five metres.
The best camera in terms of features, size, and price, however, has to be the recently released DJI Osmo Nano.
This tiny camera features a magnetic vision dock, allowing the main unit to be used on its own. It’s currently available at the iStore for R7,299 (64GB) and R7,999 (128GB).
With a range of clever accessories, you can attach it to your chest using the magnetic strap or clip it to a cap for dynamic POV shots. Combined with market-leading image stabilization, this camera is my top choice for pure versatility.
Cheapest 4K Action Camera Option: Volkano Extreme Series
However, if you’re hesitant to spend that much on an action camera, the Volkano Extreme Series 4K Action Camera might be your best bet. Retailing between R1,019 and R1,229, it’s by far the most affordable option — though that lower price does come with a noticeable drop in image quality.
